Always believe in yourself. Do this and no matter where you are, you will have nothing to fear.

Photo: Alexander Grey. Meaning:
At face value, the line is a simple statement about self-confidence as an antidote to fear: circumstances or surroundings matter less than one’s inner conviction. Believing in yourself, the line suggests, is what makes you unafraid regardless of where you find yourself. In context, this is a mentor’s reassurance — meant to steady someone who is frightened and out of their depth.
Origin:
The line is dialogue from “The Cat Returns” (2002), a Studio Ghibli film. In the story, it’s spoken by the character Baron (Baron Humbert von Gikkingen), a dapper cat-statue-turned-gentleman who acts as a guide and mentor to the young protagonist, Haru, as she navigates the perilous Cat Kingdom. The reassuring, storybook tone fits that role well — a mentor comforting a scared teenager.
This explains why the quote has no traceable interview, essay, or memoir source: it was never something said outside of the film’s script.
Author:
The line is commonly attributed online to Hayao Miyazaki, but that attribution appears to be false. “The Cat Returns” was directed by Hiroyuki Morita, not Miyazaki — Miyazaki was involved with Studio Ghibli as a senior figure but didn’t direct or write this particular film. The quote is dialogue spoken by a fictional character, not a personal statement by Miyazaki himself.
