We roamed the fields and riversides when we were young and gay. We chased the bees and plucked the flowers in the merry, merry month of May.

Photo: Janusz Walczak. Meaning 📜🌼: The lines: “We roamed through the fields and riverbanks when we were young and happy. We chased away the bees and picked the flowers in the cheerful, happy month of May.” primarily express: nostalgia for youth, carefree spirit and joie de vivre, connection with nature, May as a symbol of spring, blossoming, and happiness. The speaker looks back on a time of: free roaming in nature, playful innocence, youthful cheerfulness, a lost but cherished spring of life. The tone is therefore not only cheerful but also slightly ‘melancholy’: happiness belongs to the past. 🏛️ Origin:  It concerns the opening lines of the English song: “The Merry, Merry Month of May”.             The original English lyrics read:
“We roamed the fields and river sides,
When we were young and gay;
We chased the bees and plucked the flowers,
In the merry, merry month of May.”
Important points: it is therefore a ‘song’, not a proverb; the lines date from the 19th century; the imagery aligns with an older tradition in which “May” stands for: spring 🌱, youth 🌼, love 💛, cheerfulness ☀️. 👤 Author: Stephen Collins Foster (1826–1864).
He was an American composer and songwriter, known for, among others: “Oh! Susanna”, “Camptown Races”, “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair”, “Beautiful Dreamer”. Dating: Song: “The Merry, Merry Month of May”. Published: 1862.
