The flowry May, who from her green lap, throws the yellow cowslip and the pale primrose. Hail bounteous May that dost inspire mirth and youth and warm desire. Woods and groves are of thy dressing. Hill and dale doth boast thy blessing.

Photo: Annie Spratt. Meaning 🌼 🌿: Literally: Milton describes: the arrival of the morning, the entry of May, flowers such as: cowslip = primrose, primrose = primula / primrose-like spring flower, nature being clothed by May. Figuratively: May symbolizes: 🌱 renewal, 😊 cheerfulness, 🧒 youth, ❤️ desire / zest for life, 🌼 fertility and beauty. The lines therefore mean approximately: May brings life, bloom, beauty, and cheerfulness to nature and to people. 👤 Author: John Milton (1608–1674). English poet, best known for: “Paradise Lost”, “Paradise Regained”, “Samson Agonistes”. This is therefore not a standalone “saying”, but a “piece of poetry”. 📚 Origin: It comes from the poem “Song on May Morning”. Title: “Song on May Morning”. Probably written: 1629. First publication: later included in his collections. ✍️ Original English text:
Now the bright morning star, day’s harbinger,
Comes dancing from the East, and leads with her
The flow’ry May, who from her green lap throws
The yellow cowslip and the pale primrose.
Hail bounteous May that dost inspire
Mirth and youth and warm desire;
Woods and groves are of thy dressing,
Hill and dale doth boast thy blessing.
Context: The poem is a “hymn of praise to the month of May” and to spring. May is depicted as a “feminine, abundant figure” who throws flowers from her “green womb”.
