(née Turner; 4 May 1749 – 28 October 1806).
English novelist and poet of the School of Sensibility whose Elegiac Sonnets (1784) contributed to the revival of the form in England. She also helped to set conventions for Gothic fiction and wrote political novels of sensibility. Despite ten novels, four children’s books and other works, she saw herself mainly as a poet and expected to be remembered for that.

Another May, new buds and flowers shall bring. Ah! Why has happiness no second spring?
Photo: Petra. Meaning 📖🌷: The idea behind the line is: nature returns every year, in May new buds, flowers and growth appear, but human happiness does not always return, lost love, youth, innocence or a happy period cannot simply be repeated. In simpler English: Spring comes back, but sometimes happiness doesn’t. Or: nature gets a second chance, but humans often do not. The tone is therefore ‘wistful’, ‘melancholic’ and a bit ‘romantic-tragic’. ✍️ Origin:Original English text: “Another May new buds and flowers shall bring: Ah! why has happiness no second Spring?”Author: These are the closing lines of a sonnet by Charlotte Smith.Source:“Elegiac Sonnets”. Poem: “Sonnet II. Written at the close of Spring.” (1784 first edition; later editions sometimes differ in numbering). 🔎 Please note: Due to different editions of “Elegiac Sonnets”, the numbering of the sonnets may sometimes vary, but the attribution to “Charlotte Smith” is correct. 👤 Who was Charlotte Smith? Charlotte Smith was an English poet and novelist. She lived from 1749 to 1806, famous for her ‘elegiac’, sensitive and melancholic poetry, and had a great influence on ‘Romanticism’. Her poetry often revolves around: loss, memory, nature, sadness, the contrast between the eternal cycle of nature and the fragility of human life.
