John Donne:
(born 1571 or 1572 died – 31 March 1631).
English poet, scholar, soldier and secretary born into a recusant family, who later became a cleric in the Church of England. Under Royal Patronage, he was made Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral in London (1621–1631). He is considered the preeminent representative of the metaphysical poets. His poetical works are noted for their metaphorical and sensual style and include sonnets, love poems, religious poems, Latin translations, epigrams, elegies, songs and satires. He is also known for his sermons.
No spring or summer beauty has such grace as I have seen in an autumnal face.
The seasons symbolize stages of life:
– Spring — youth and freshness
– Summer — beauty at its conventional peak
– Autumn — maturity and advancing age
Donne says that the face of a mature woman possesses a distinctive ‘grace, dignity, and depth’ surpassing the merely youthful beauty associated with spring or summer.
In the poem, he contrasts youthful beauty—which may provoke intense physical desire—with mature beauty, which inspires affection mixed with ‘respect and reverence’. Thus, an “autumnal face” is not literally a face seen in autumn, but a poetic image for a woman in the mature season of her life.
The quotation is therefore a celebration of ‘beauty enriched by age, experience, and character’, although the complete poem also makes a characteristically Donnean distinction between graceful maturity and extreme old age.

It comes from his poem commonly titled “The Autumnal”, often numbered “Elegy IX” (the numbering varies between editions).
The original wording is:
> “No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace,
> As I have seen in one autumnal face.”
Donne’s poems circulated in manuscript during his lifetime; “The Autumnal” was published posthumously in “Poems, by J. D. ” (1633). The version using “or,” “has,” and “an” is a modernized adaptation of the original.
