Koning van Castilië, León en Galicië van 1 juni 1252 tot zijn dood in 1284. Tijdens de verkiezingen van 1257 koos een dissidente factie hem op 1 april tot koning van Duitsland. Hij deed in 1275 afstand van zijn aanspraak op Duitsland en door het sluiten van een verbond met het Koninkrijk Engeland in 1254 ook van zijn aanspraak op het hertogdom Gascogne.
