Christoffel Columbus

Christopher Columbus:

(between 25 August and 31 October 1451 – 20 May 1506).
Italian explorer and navigator from the Republic of Genoa who completed four Spanish-based voyages across the Atlantic Ocean sponsored by the Catholic Monarchs, opening the way for the widespread European exploration and colonization of the Americas. His expeditions were the first known European contact with the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The name Christopher Columbus is the anglicization of the Latin Christophorus Columbus. Growing up on the coast of Liguria, he went to sea at a young age and traveled widely, as far north as the British Isles and as far south as what is now Ghana. He married Portuguese noblewoman Filipa Moniz Perestrelo, who bore a son, Diego, and was based in Lisbon for several years. He later took a Castilian mistress, Beatriz Enríquez de Arana, who bore a son, Ferdinand.

The air soft as that of Seville in April, and so fragrant that it was delicious to breathe it.

Photo: Jonas Hoss. Meaning 📖 🌟:  Below you will find details regarding the poetic statement about the air of Seville. The quote is a ‘lyrical and sensory description’ of a perfect climate. It evokes an atmosphere of: 🌸 Softness: A pleasant, mild temperature, neither too hot nor too cold, comparable to spring. 👃 Delightful scent: The air is so fresh and fragrant that breathing it in is a pleasure in itself. 🌴 Comparison with the ideal: Columbus uses Seville in April (a city and time of year known for their beautiful spring weather) as the ultimate gold standard for a perfect day. 🗺️ Origin: The words can be traced back to a crucial historical event: 📅 Date: The diary entry of October 8, 1492. 📍Location: Written aboard the flagship, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, just four days before the landing in the New World. Context: At that moment, the expedition was enjoying exceptionally calm weather. The sea was as calm as the Guadalquivir River in Seville, and the air was so soft and fragrant that Columbus (mistakenly) imagined himself in paradise or thought he was close to land. ✍️ Author & Tradition: The ultimate source is Christopher Columbus, but the story behind the text is complex: Originality: Columbus wrote the text in his ship’s log during his maiden voyage. He often referred to himself in the third person as “the Admiral”. Preservation: The original log has been lost. The text we know today is a summary and a partially verbatim copy made by the Dominican priest Bartolomé de las Casas in the 1530s. Nuance: Although the core of the quote is undoubtedly from Columbus, Las Casas may have paraphrased or edited the words. It is therefore a quote ‘by’ Columbus, but transmitted and perhaps colored ‘by’ Las Casas.
