Why I love October
Why do I love October?
There is crimson and golden nuts in the forest,
There is fruit in orchard and in hills;
‘This is the banquet hall of seasons’,
When their purple wine is spilled;
Enjoying splashes of colour,
Where the richness of the year is worked.
And so I love October.
‘This is the fulfilment of faith for me;
In the beauty and gold of His barn,
The sumptuous Giver I see.’

The poem answers the question posed in the title by listing what makes October special.
– ‘Colors and fruits’:
Forests, orchards, and hills are filled with red, gold, nuts, and fruit.
– ‘Banquet hall of the seasons’:
October is the celebration where the year displays its abundance. The “purple wine” represents grapes and the rich, flowing colors of autumn.
– ‘Work and reward’:
“The year’s wealth is harvested” refers to the harvest itself. What was sown and tended during spring and summer is now being gathered in.
– ‘Faith’:
The final stanza turns the poem into an expression of gratitude. For the author, the full barn is a visible sign of a generous Creator (“the bountiful Giver”), and October thus “fulfills” her trust.
The core theme is gratitude:
Beauty and abundance demonstrate that the year was not in vain.
Origin:
– The poem appears on MeWe. As this is a social network, it is likely a shared post or a meme rather than a formally published poem.
– English appears to be the original language; the Dutch version is likely a literal translation.
– I have found no source, publication details, or date of origin. The text does not match well-known poems about October by poets such as Longfellow, Dunbar, Frost, or Rossetti.
– Such texts are often shared without attribution, and the wording may change along the way. Consequently, it is uncertain whether the person who posted it is the original author.
Author:
– ‘Likely’:
“Mamie”—either the author or the person who posted the message. – ‘Undetermined’:
Her full name and whether she wrote the poem herself. MeWe posts are not publicly searchable, so I cannot locate the original post. Without such information, it is best described as a personal poem by “Mamie” (source: MeWe) rather than attributing it to a known poet.
