October is a fine and dangerous season in America. a wonderful time to begin anything at all. You go to college, and every course in the catalogue looks wonderful.

🍂 “Fine and dangerous”:
– “Fine” → October evokes crisp air, new beginnings, intellectual energy, the “back to school” feeling of fresh starts.
– “Dangerous” → This juxtaposition is key to Merton’s voice:
– The ‘danger’ lies in ‘seduction by possibility’
— everything seems promising, but this can lead to scattered ambition, superficial enthusiasm, or spiritual/intellectual distraction.
– For Merton specifically, this ties into his broader theme:
The ‘restlessness of worldly desire’ before his conversion to Catholicism and monastic life.
📚 The college catalogue metaphor:
– Every course “looks wonderful” → symbolizes:
– The ‘intoxication of unlimited options’ in youth
– A metaphor for ‘spiritual hunger’ — searching for meaning across many paths
– Foreshadowing of Merton’s own eventual narrowing of focus onto ‘one true calling’ (monastic contemplation), contrasting with this earlier diffuse enthusiasm.
✍️ Author:
Thomas Merton ✅
– Source:
This line comes from “The Seven Storey Mountain” (1948), Merton’s famous spiritual autobiography.
– Context:
Merton describes his time as a young student at ‘Columbia University’, reflecting on the excitement and possibility of starting a new academic year.
> ⚠️ Note:
I cannot verify ’the exact phrasing/placement with 100% certainty from memory alone’ — exact quotes from longer works can sometimes be misremembered or slightly altered in circulation.
🎯 Thematic Significance:
October:
Transition, liminality, beauty before decline
“Dangerous”:
Over-enthusiasm, lack of discernment
College catalogue:
The many false starts of a soul searching for truth
This passage is often cited as an example of ‘Merton’s lyrical, reflective prose style’, blending concrete sensory detail (autumn, academia) with deeper existential and spiritual undertones — very characteristic of his memoir’s narrative voice looking back on his pre-monastic life with both nostalgia and critical distance.
