You were my September song. Summer lasted too long.

> “You were my September song / Summer lasted too long.”
This is a lyric from “September Song”, released in 2016 by English singer-songwriter      JP Cooper. It later appeared on his debut album ‘Raised Under Grey Skies’ (2017).
It is therefore ‘a song lyric, not a traditional proverb or established saying’. JP Cooper performed and co-wrote the song, so it is commonly attributed to him, although the song has additional co-writing credits.
đź’ Meaning:
The song nostalgically recalls a romance from when the narrator was about fifteen:
– “You were my September song”
— the person is associated with September, the end of summer, and a memorable period of young love.
– “Summer lasted too long”
— summer seemed to pass slowly, perhaps because he was waiting to see that person again when school resumed.
– More broadly, the lines express how ’time can feel endless in adolescence’, while those youthful relationships later seem distant and fleeting.
The phrase has a bittersweet autumnal feeling: ‘a cherished love remembered after the relationship and youth have passed’.
