Despatie’s big breakthrough came in 1998 when he won gold in the 10-meter platform at the Commonwealth Games as a 13-year-old, achieving a perfect score of all 10s in one jump. This achievement was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2000.
He is the only diver to have become world champion in three different disciplines at the senior level—the 1-meter springboard, the 3-meter springboard, and the 10-meter platform—albeit in different years. At the Junior World Championships, he did win all the disciplines in the same year, in 2002.
