German physicist. He is world-famous for his discovery of a new type of radiation that can penetrate soft materials unhindered. He called it X-rays. In Dutch and German-speaking countries, the physical phenomenon was named after him: Röntgen radiation. In 1901, he received the first Nobel Prize in Physics for this discovery.
