Donalyn Miller

Donalyn Miller:

American teacher and author, best known for her influential work on reading promotion and literacy education.
She is the author of, among other books, The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child, which is widely used by (elementary/secondary) schools and teachers who want to encourage reading in young people. In her work, she advocates that reading is not merely a school assignment, but something that students (and adults) can enrich their entire lives—reading as a lifelong habit, a celebration of imagination and empathy.

Reading changes your life. Reading unlocks worlds unknown or forgotten, taking travelers around the world and through time… Through characters – the saints and the sinners, real or imagined – reading shows you how to be a better human being.

Reading opens up worlds: through books, you travel — literally or figuratively — to other times, cultures, histories, and ways of thinking. You gain access to experiences and perspectives that you might never encounter in your own life. Reading as escape and enrichment: reading outside the school setting gives you freedom; it is a way to determine your own learning and at your own pace.
Reading as moral and human development: Through fiction or true stories, you learn about humanity, mistakes, life lessons — it can give you empathy, sharpen your moral awareness, and make you question your own choices and values.
