Tahereh Mafi was born in 1988 in a small village in Connecticut, the youngest of five children, with four older brothers. Her parents are Iranian immigrants. At the age of twelve, the family moved to Northern California and two years later to Orange County. Mafi first graduated from University High School in Irvine, California, and later from Soka University of America in Aliso Viejo, California. She has extensive language skills and is proficient in eight different languages to varying degrees. She studied for a semester in Barcelona, where she focused on Spanish literature.
Books are easily destroyed. But words will live as long as people can remember them.
