George MacDonald

George MacDonald:

(Huntly, 10 December 1824 – Ashtead, 18 September 1905).
Scottish author, poet and minister.

MacDonald became best known for his sweeping fairy tales and fantasy books. His own works inspired later writers, including J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Lewis described MacDonald as ‘his master’: “I once picked up the book Phantastes in a railway station and started reading. A few hours later I realised I had started a new part of my life.” He also later had George MacDonald act as the main character’s teacher in the book The Great Divorce, in which he explains heaven and hell. G.K. Chesterton said the book The Princess and the Goblin had changed his life.

May had now set in, but up here among the hills, she was May by curtesy only, or if she was May, she would never be might.
