When you focus on problems, you will have more problems. When you focus on possibilities, you will have more opportunities.
Photo: Joel Muniz. Meaning📌 💡:Attention directs your experience and behavior: what you mentally focus on influences what you notice (selective attention), how you interpret situations, and what actions you take (or don’t take). Problem-focus vs. solution-focus: With problem-focus, you’re more likely to worry, see risks, and experience blockages. With possibility-focus, you’re more likely to explore options, experiment, seek help, and therefore create opportunities. Important nuance: the saying doesn’t mean “ignore problems,” but rather: don’t get stuck in the problem frame—shift to possibilities/actions.🔍 Origin: This type of statement comes from the motivational speaking/self-help tradition (20th century), where “mindset,” “attitude,” and “focus” are central. It aligns with well-known psychological principles such as: selective attention (you see more of what you’re looking for), confirmation bias (your brain is more likely to confirm your expectations), and self-fulfilling prophecy (expectation → behavior → outcome). However: a clear ‘first source’ (such as a specific book + page number) is difficult to substantiate for this specific quote. 👤 Author: The quote is very often attributed to “Zig Ziglar” Zig Ziglar = Hilary Hinton “Zig” Ziglar (1926–2012), American sales trainer and motivational speaker. Tony Robbins, American motivational speaker, is also mentioned in this context, but for neither of them can 100% be said with certainty. ⚠️ Not watertight (quotes circulating online often lack a primary source)
