I used to think the worst thing in life was to end up all alone. It’s not. The worst thing in life is ending up with people who make you feel all alone.
Image: Peter van Geest AI. Meaning: People often think that being alone (having no one around you) is the worst thing. Ultimately, it turns out that it is even more painful to be surrounded by people, yet still experience a deep sense of loneliness. So it is not just about physical loneliness, but mainly about emotional loneliness: you can feel alone even when you are surrounded by others. The quote highlights the idea that relationships or friendships do not automatically protect you from loneliness if those relationships are empty, cold or disconnected. Origin: the line is from the film World’s Greatest Dad (2009), in which Robin Williams plays the role of “Lance Clayton”. The line was written by Bobcat Goldthwait, who also wrote and directed the film. Because it is often (incorrectly) attributed to Robin Williams, it is particularly well known: his image as a funny, warm, but also sensitive actor reinforces the impact of the statement.
