Hannah Arendt:

German-American Jewish philosopher and political thinker, who fled Germany from National Socialism and the persecution of Jews and particularly immersed herself in totalitarian political systems. Initially she wrote in German, later mainly in English.
The death of human empathy is one of the earliest and most telling signs of a culture about to fall into barbarism.
