Lolle W. Nauta

Lolle Wibe Nauta:

(Sneek, 9 February 1929 – Groningen, 11 September 2006).

Dutch philosopher and PvdA party ideologue.

Nauta was born the son of teacher Wiebe Nauta (1897-1964), later chairman of the Sneker Kamerkring for the CHU, and his second wife Pietje de Jong (1900-1937). He was the brother of former state secretary Dieuwke de Graaff-Nauta (CDA) and of radio programme maker Jan Nauta (1934-2020).

Nauta, who studied theology, philosophy and sociology in Groningen and Göttingen, among other places, obtained a PhD with a thesis on Albert Camus, was a lecturer from 1967 to 1971 with the teaching assignment Introduction to Philosophy, and was professor of philosophy of science and social philosophy at the University of Groningen from 1971 until his retirement in 1994. He was attached to the University of Zambia in Lusaka as professor of philosophy from 1979-1982. In his philosophical work, he opposed the pretensions of comprehensive philosophical systems and contrasted them with a philosophy that is always ‘moving’, from one discipline to another. He saw the beginning of this movement with Descartes, who linked philosophy and the natural sciences.

As man has the ability to choose from more alternatives, he has more freedom. In fact, money is nothing but a collection of symbolised alternatives.
