Vestdijk grew up in Harlingen as the only child of a PE teacher and showed an interest in music, reading and the visual arts from an early age. He went to the HBS in Leeuwarden, where Slauerhoff was a class above him. During this period, the first depressions presented themselves. After graduating, he went to study medicine in Amsterdam in 1917.
