The best classroom and the richest cupboard is roofed only by the sky.
Image: Peter van Geest AI. Meaning: Nature is the best learning environment: Outdoor learning offers richer and more authentic experiences than a traditional classroom. Nature offers endless learning resources: The “richest larder” refers to the abundance of natural materials, phenomena, and experiences that nature has to offer. Freedom and space are essential: The sky as a “roof” symbolizes limitless possibilities and the freedom to explore. This vision remains relevant today and forms the basis for modern Forest Schools and outdoor education, where children learn, develop self-confidence, and follow their curiosity through direct experience with nature. Origin: In her 1919 book, “The Nursery School,” McMillan described the importance of outdoor play for children’s health and well-being. She was influenced by the educational philosopher Froebel, who based his ideas on the value of learning outdoors in nature.
