Cleese was born in the village of Uphill, south of Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, the only child of Muriel Cross (1899-2000) and insurance agent Reginald Francis Cleese (1893-1972). The family name was initially ‘Cheese’, but his father changed it to ‘Cleese’ in 1915 because he was bullied with it.”
