(Ancient Greek: Ἐπίκουρος, Epikouros, Dutch, obsolete: Epicure) (341 BC – 270 BC).
Greek philosopher and founder of the Epicurean school in Hellenistic Athens. He was a very prolific thinker and is said to have written more than any philosopher before him. Of all these writings, only three letters and about a hundred doctrines have survived. Epicurus’ philosophy focused on ethics and natural philosophy. For further information on Epicurus’ life and philosophy, one has to rely on authors such as Diogenes Laërtius, Lucretius, Plutarchus and Cicero.
