Jules Verne:
(Nantes, 8 February 1828 – Amiens, 24 March 1905).
French author of adventure travel descriptions using new techniques, to many parts of the earth and to unknown areas such as the deep sea, the interior of the earth and the moon. Verne is often considered the father of science fiction. This is probably due to the fantastic nature of his stories, which, however, were mostly inspired by then-existing knowledge. Verne himself flatly denied, that he was a futuristic prophet, stating that the predictive nature was coincidental. Or as his publisher Jules Hetzel described the purpose of his books: ‘Education that amuses, amusement that educates’.
