Melchor de Santa Cruz

Melchor de Santa Cruz de Dueñas:
(Toledo, 1505 – 1585).

Spanish writer and goldsmith.

Writer, silversmith, goldsmith and merchant, he was born in Toledo and lived in this city between 1520 and 1576. He is known as the author of a very popular miscellaneous dedicated to John of Austria, the Spanish forest of apothegms and phrases, wise and gracious, of some Spaniards (1574). It is a collection of jokes or anecdotes in 11 parts: ecclesiastics, nobles, ingenuous responses, officials of justice, professions, artists and lovers, funny, lame or misshapen sayings, mockery, quirky sayings and women and invalids. Mix anecdotal phrases, sentences, storytellers, jokes, miscellaneous and biographical details of many characters from a wide variety of sources.

The only difference between sages and fools is that sages dream at night and fools dream during the day and at night.
