Hugo de Groot:
(Delft, 10 April 1583 – Rostock, 28 August 1645).
Dutch jurist and writer. He is also known as (Hugo) Grotius and is sporadically referred to as Huig de Groot in older texts.
De Groot wrote Latin tragedies and poems, theological treatises and Dutch poems. His main works are in the historical and legal fields. His most famous work is De iure belli ac pacis (On the Law of War and Peace) from 1625. It forms the basis for modern international law. He is also known for his advocacy of free access to the sea (and free trade) the Mare Liberum (1609).
There is great happiness in not knowing some things.
